Mending Light was an artwork inspired by the peaceful moments of sunrise and sunset. These moments remind us that life is a cycle of beginnings and endings. The artwork showed the beauty of a day, highlighting that even during tough times, a new day brings hope, represented by dawn, and everything eventually comes to an end, defined by sunset.
This piece also highlighted how time can help us heal and grow emotionally. It used the beauty of day and night to create a sense of calm and hope for the viewer. The light colour cycle changed over 3 minutes and 33 seconds, adding a soothing movement that enhances the artwork's effect.
Mending Light was designed to represent healing and renewal. It was 1 meter tall, 1.6 meters wide, and 0.15 meters deep. The artwork featured an aluminium frame with 24k gold gilding, which added elegance and luxury. Integrated LEDs and microcomputing components bring the artwork to life.
Mending Light premiered at the Light+Life exhibition during NGV's Melbourne Design Week 2020. By being included in this exhibition, it joined other light-based artworks that explore how light, design, and art work together.
