Concept Created for VIVID Light 2017 - Park Hyatt The Rocks
Status: Unrealised

Presence is a proposed concept light installation created by Aly Indermuhle in 2017 for VIVID Light. The concept was unrealised as the Park Hyatt was not participating in VIVID Light in 2017, and the artwork was proposed as a site-specific creation.

From the Brief:
Vibrant blues and natural tones of light stretch across the 15-meter-long sandstone wall as a blazing sun rises boldly at its heart. They are familiar colours and reassuring in their form to all who see them; it is the earth as viewed from the edge of space; it is our planet, our presence. This beautiful, intoxicating glimpse at our home from far above, bathed in mesmerising light, is both inviting and meditative.

The globe and the rising sun symbolise not only our world but also Australia’s active presence in it. VIVID Light attracts tourists from around the world, and this artwork is a reminder to the many visitors of Australia’s global significance. This country is rich in culture, history, and people; Presence is a celebration of the combination of these elements.

The aluminium construction reaches 40 slim bars along the rich sandstone wall of the Park Hyatt across from Campbell’s Cove Jetty. The glowing warmth of the light bounces off of the tiny sand crystals and radiates into the night. The lightwork’s slimline structure hugs the wall, offering a low profile that is sleek and elegant while functional.

The height of the work is just above the spectator’s head, providing an intimate view of the light.
