Concept Created for VIVID Light 2017
Status: Unrealised

Drawn to Light is a proposed concept light installation created by Aly Indermuhle in 2017 for VIVID Light. The concept was unrealised as the steps of the Sydney Opera House were previously determined to be engaged by another artwork.

From the Brief:
The opera house steps are built in an elegant design featuring noseless treads and a short gap between the inside edge of the tread and the riser. When seen from the south, the Opera House sails during the daytime cast shadows onto the stairs, and it is these shadow shapes we aim to imitate using light strips that detect when people are present in front of them. LED strips of 3m in length are mounted on solid backs and placed within the tread-riser gap, facing outwards. On each 3m segment, a touch less sensor detects the presence of people or objects on the stair tread immediately in front of the LED strip. This signal is processed by a programmable logic circuit (PLC) that controls the colours and brightness this particular 3m segment of LED strip is set at. This effect results in those areas that are frequently travelled being more colourfully and brightly lit than the areas where nobody has been for a while. Using dampening and an adaptive time constant for the light algorithm, the change of the lights becomes gradual and subtle, rendering the Opera House stairs into a beautiful light contour showing the shadow of the Opera House sails and reacting to the presence of people.
