Connections was an enthralling light art installation that offered a mesmerizing visual representation of the intricate web of communication facilitated by radio waves emanating from our mobile devices. From phone calls and text messages to emails, notifications, and personal messages, every form of communication shared a common thread—they connected us through invisible radio waves.

In Connections, the transmission and reception of these radio waves were visually manifested. The installation listened to signal levels across frequencies that resonated with daily communication traffic. It captured the intensity of these waves and translated them into a series of captivating light emissions; the more robust the traffic on the radio waves, the more vibrant and luminous the colours graced the columns at VIVID Light 2017.

Over time, these colourful points, representing tiny fragments of information being sent and received, delicately descended along the sides of the light work, only to vanish forever, never to return. This ephemeral display offered viewers a fleeting glimpse into the sheer volume of information exchanged, beautifully encapsulating the essence of our interconnected society.

Connections was conceived by the artistic collaboration of Aly Indermühle, the creative director, and Dr Balthasar Indermühle, the technical director, under the collective name of Indermuhle Plus. Their expertise and vision combined to create a captivating installation that seamlessly merged artistry and technology.

This illuminating artwork was showcased in Blight Park, just outside the Museum of Contemporary Art, during VIVID 2017—an event that celebrated innovation, creativity, and light in Australia. Representing the country, Connections served as a powerful symbol of Australia's contribution to the world of art and technology.

Visitors to VIVID Light immersed themselves in the captivating world of Connections as it invited contemplation and reflection on the invisible threads that bound us in an interconnected era. They experienced the beauty that emerged from the sheer magnitude of information shared and received—a testament to the remarkable tapestry woven by our connected society.
